On July 23.2007 Emerica and 5boro owner Steve Rodriguez teamed up again to bring you the now famous “Back to the Banks contest” at the Brooklyn Banks underneath the Brooklyn bridge.
Now don’t go looking for the banks in Brooklyn, they are underneath the Manhattan side of the bridge (made that mistake about 10 years ago and almost got killed) but I guess the Manhattan banks just doesn’t have the same ring to it!
This years contest was amazing and as usual all the New York killers were there, but this year Jake Duncombe, Dustin Dollin, Andrew Reynolds and many others were floating around from obstacle to hard to skate obstacle. The obstacles werent made improperly they were just built to mimmick NYC street spots. That added to this contests unique approach to what a pro street event should be. Ran by skaters for skaters in the streets.
Manny Santiago won the handrail event with tricks like this kickflip boardslide. What you can’t tell from the photo is that just to get to the rail these guys have to battle the crowd and blindly fly around a pillar that’s about fifteen feet from the rail itself. So you have no time to set up and people everywhere.
Steve Rodriguez does a bang up job of holding it down and keeping the kooks out of the way and using a small area to put on a big contest!
Interstate will definitly be back next year to cover the event, its to fun to miss!
